Firewalls are network security devices that monitor and filter incoming and outgoing network traffic based on established policies. They sit between our private internal network and the public internet and block malicious traffic and threats to the network and other IT assets. In 2022, the University’s legacy firewalls were approaching the end of their usable life, and we began the process of transitioning to new ones. When complete, the updated equipment will provide more robust performance and improve the security posture of IT services. Earlier this year, we finished migrating the firewall that protects the servers and applications housed in the data center. We are now focused on departmental firewalls that protect IT assets outside the data center and are reaching out to impacted units to schedule their respective migrations.
