A NetID is a unique, public identifier that is assigned to every individual associated with the university.  These are perpetual and have traditionally followed the format of three letters and five numbers.  The letter group at the beginning is loosely based on an individual’s legal name.  The five numbers signify creation year and a sequence value of that letter group for that year.  This process ensures that NetIDs can be created efficiently.

We have received feedback that the association with legal name is an issue under a number of different circumstances.  In response, we are considering randomizing the three letters.  This would remove any connection to legal name while still preserving uniqueness.  We are tentatively planning to begin issuing NetIDs after January 9th using this format.
