A WiFi access point is a device representing the network side of the wireless connection to your device. It serves the same role as a cell tower does with respect to your phone. There was an ongoing issue with the code on certain models of university access points. ITS had been mitigating this problem, and in preparation for the new semester, we upgraded access points to an up-to-date version of code. This did not correct the old bug and introduced a new one, which was more disruptive and did not have a work-around. ITS rolled back to the previous version of code this past weekend and will continue to mitigate the old bug until a stable fix is available that will be effective at UConn.
ITS is aware that the community has experienced ongoing connectivity issues on campus, and we will continue to pursue all opportunities to correct. However, there are numerous factors that may cause connection problems, which can be introduced from our infrastructure all the way out to and including the wireless device. We are visiting classrooms to collect information and assist students. We have also published a guide with troubleshooting techniques that have helped many students establish a connection to UCONN-SECURE.
